The speed camera is turned off - temporarily - and the controversy immediately reignites in the Municipality of Selargius . The news emerged during the last meeting of the City Council: the speed detector placed in the Selargino section of the 131 Dir in August 2020 has no longer been active for a few weeks, awaiting the new law on the highway code announced by the Government and a possible new tender to entrust the rental service of the system, which expired at the beginning of September.

The controversy

The topic returned to the benches of the civic assembly in Piazza Cellarium with the latest off-balance sheet debt - just over 8 thousand euros - linked to convictions for the Municipality after hundreds of appeals by fined motorists. «A film already seen», the words of the minority leader Franco Camba who emphasized the reasons reported by the justice of the peace in the sentences: «The lack of distance from the first sign indicating the presence of the speed camera and the same detector, confirming that the system could not be installed at that point, much less used by the Municipality of Selargius. We are not against speed cameras", reiterated Camba, "but we contest the illegitimacy of the positioning as pointed out to us in the sentences, with quite a few resources spent in these three years by the Municipality".

The shutdown

Debt aside, the controversy focuses on the decision to keep the speed camera off. “In recent months we presented a motion where we asked for it to be turned off out of caution, and today we discover that it has been deactivated for days,” Camba said again in Council. "I consider it serious not to have extended the contract given that you have always believed that the speed camera was necessary to save the lives of motorists: perhaps from 1 September human lives are no longer important?", he added. «You should admit that you removed it and haven't re-done the race yet because you realized that the minority is right in contesting the illegitimacy of this speed camera», highlighted PD councilor Paola Maccioni, «as confirmed by the 300 sentences of condemnation. Furthermore, I advise you to withdraw the appeals you have made focusing on the fact that the speed limit for those arriving from the 554 is lower, because you continue to be wrong", added the Dem representative, "this is demonstrated by a recent ruling from the Supreme Court".

The councilor

The plant has been shut down since September 1st, as confirmed by Budget Councilor Sandro Porqueddu during the debate. «The three-year rental contract has expired», admitted the member of the Council, «and the Government has announced possible restrictions regarding speed cameras, the decree should be issued in a few days. At that point we will delve into the details of the new provision to understand if any corrections need to be made and how to define the new assignment tender. As an administration", he reiterated, "we are ready to intervene if necessary". Words which, however, did not convince the minority councillors, who left the Chamber at the time of the vote.
