What is the situation with the TB outbreak in Bancali prison? The prison police union USPP is asking this after the cases registered in recent days and reported by the social partners. «Currently - declares the president of the union Giuseppe Moretti - there appear to be numerous agents absent due to illness or in any case receiving attention due to their physical conditions at risk and forced to undergo prophylaxis to avoid infection. This is obviously a cause for concern from the point of view of their health, but also for the related security and organizational problems, given that as far as we know, over 100 penitentiary police officers from the prison are absent".
The actual spread of the disease still remains a mystery and the USPP asks the institutions "what measures they intend to adopt to ensure the health safety of prison police personnel".
The organization then maintains that thorough health checks must be carried out on detainees upon entry to the facility, especially non-EU citizens. «Preventive prophylaxis should not be seen as an anti-institutional constraint, but as the protection of the health of the entire community that works within penitentiary facilities». And a request is therefore presented to take action to «start a check on the possible introduction of mandatory blood tests upon the first entry of prisoners at risk».
