The calm in Massama prison lasted just two days. After Monday's riot, fresh disturbances erupted this afternoon, with some inmates "armed" with batons, damaging furniture and smashing lamps; one even attempted to attack a prison officer .
Raffaele Murtas, regional secretary of SINAPPE, reported the latest incident. "There were moments of high tension with inmates in the medium and high security divisions, who created serious disturbances in the wards ." The chaos continued until late into the evening, requiring additional efforts from prison officers, who were forced to stay on duty beyond their normal hours to restore normalcy.
"The situation in the Oristano penitentiary has become unmanageable," Murtas emphasizes. "The workload of the police personnel is no longer compatible with safety and professional dignity."
The critical issues are linked to overcrowding, which has worsened in recent weeks with the arrival of 22 high-security inmates from Nuoro and 32 medium-security inmates from Rome . "This constant pressure has a severe impact on the family and mental health of the staff, now worn down by grueling shifts, constant recalls, and an increasingly critical operating climate." Sinappe reiterates the need for resources, adequate staffing, appropriate tools, and a review of management policies which, "over the years, have contributed to the progressive deterioration of operating conditions."
