The rites of Holy Week in Alghero come to life. Good Friday from the Misericordia church, at 8pm, the long procession will cross the streets of the old city to arrive at the cathedral of Santa Maria where the rite of the Descent will take place.

After the service, the thousands of red torches will line up at the coffin of the wooden Christ, with the Jermans Blancs of the Confrarìa del Gonfalò (the Alghero confraternity of Mercy) and the Catalan brothers. 17 choirs from all over the island and the Dalerci band will make the religious event even more evocative.

The traditional farols , the red candles that every faithful will carry in procession in Alghero, are made by a single trader, Stefano Pinna , to keep faith with a promise. «In my shop there was once Mrs. Anna Maria who always made farols from the 1950s until 1998 when she retired at 83, – says Stefano Pinna – and it was she who asked me not to interrupt the tradition and to never skip a year. Since then I have dedicated myself to this activity every year. I'm the only one left."
