The bishop of Iglesias, Monsignor Mario Farci, sent a letter to Pope Leo XIV after his election yesterday. Here is the text of the letter.
«Most Blessed Father, the Church in Iglesias welcomes with joy and gratitude to the Lord your election as Bishop of Rome, Successor of the Apostle Peter. We invoke the Holy Spirit so that, after having enlightened the Most Eminent Cardinals in their choice, he may now guide and support your Petrine ministry, in favor of unity and communion in the Church, and of peace throughout the world. From now on we assure you of our fidelity to your Magisterium and our collaboration in following the steps you will indicate to us.
The Church of Iglesias, whose origins date back to the heroic testimony of the holy Martyr Antiochus, is a Diocese of ancient foundation: since the 4th century it has lived in fidelity to the Gospel and in communion with the universal Church. Today our community, while it continues its work in transmitting the faith, is experiencing a moment of particular difficulty due to depopulation and above all to the lack of work. Most Holy Father, we entrust ourselves for this to Your prayers and to the support of Your Magisterium. “In Illo unum uno”: in the one Christ we will live unity, “in the bond of unity, charity and peace” (LG 23). We have in our hearts the hope of being able to meet you as soon as possible and we also hope to be able to have you as a very welcome guest in our land of Sardinia, with the invocation to the Most Holy Mary, whom in our Diocese we venerate above all in the ancient Cathedral of Tratalias and in Sardinian land we invoke with the title of Madonna di Bonaria, accompany your ministry. With filial devotion, in communion of intent and in unity of prayer, we invoke your apostolic blessing".
