The African anticyclone is returning to Italy (and Sardinia). Normal summer temperatures will be waved away for 4-5 days, with five days of blistering heat expected, peaking between Monday and Tuesday in the South and Sardinia.
The expansion of the high pressure system of subtropical origin towards Italy, explains Lorenzo Tedici, director of iLMeteo.it, will occur over the weekend and will influence the thermometer until Tuesday or Wednesday of next week, with crazy temperatures, which could reach 45-46 degrees in Sardinia and Sicily, especially on Monday and Tuesday .
We're talking about one of the most intense heatwaves in decades. And it could even shatter the European heat record, recorded in Floridia (Syracuse) on August 11, 2021, with 48.8 degrees .
On Saturday, the hottest cities will be Oristano with 39 degrees , Foggia with 37, Forlì, Macerata and Nuoro with 36. On Sunday, the peak will be in Foggia with 40 degrees, then 38 in Lecce, Matera and Nuoro , but also watch out for 37 in Ferrara and 36 in Bologna and Mantua. Also on Sunday, an orange warning will be applied to Cagliari .
But the peak will be reached at the beginning of next week. Focusing on the city, on Monday we'll see Foggia rise to 42, Caltanissetta and Nuoro to 41, Matera, Oristano, and Syracuse to 40 , Catania and Taranto to 39. A further increase on Tuesday. And if we talk about the smaller cities , temperatures of 45-46 degrees in the shade are expected in many inland areas of Sardinia and Sicily . And with the wind, the fire danger, which will be very high , should not be underestimated.
For a bit of respite, we'll have to wait until the middle of next week when, perhaps, the Azores High will arrive and bring more bearable temperatures.
