Livestock grazing on the firing range has been banned: pollution in some areas has exceeded the so-called "soil contamination threshold concentrations," and the Prefect of Cagliari, in a memo sent to the Government, the Region, and the Municipalities of Teulada and Sant'Anna Arresi, has ordered that pending further pollution controls, sheep, goats, and cattle will no longer be allowed to graze in certain areas not exclusively used by the Ministry of Defense.
Following the prefect's intervention, the command of the First Armored Regiment sent a letter to the breeders and local institutions.
"The results of chemical analyses," the letter states, "conducted on top soil samples taken from areas of the testing range not used exclusively by the Ministry of Defense (a concession for agricultural and pastoral activities) show that the contamination threshold concentrations for areas designated for agri-food production have been exceeded." The document refers to the presence of cadmium, lead, and thallium above permitted limits. For these reasons, the command, as a precautionary measure, is announcing the closure of the agricultural and pastoral areas "pending further investigations, which will likely be conducted starting in the second ten days of August."
