He owns them, they are in excellent condition and it has been discovered that they will last a long time: this is why the Region has decided to know what the submarine fiber optic cables that connect Sardinia to the rest of the world are worth. One of the possibilities is to sell them to private individuals. And get into the ultrafast network business.

The ownership comes through 49% of the shares of Janna Scarl Srl, a company established in 2005 to manage the pipelines that transport data flows connecting Mazara del Vallo and Civitavecchia with Sardinia. The hypothesis was of a discharge in 2030, due to age.

But a recent survey has established that the infrastructure under the sea will be able to resist in full operation until at least 2049. So at Villa devoto they thought: why not earn or exploit it?

These are 12 pairs of cables - as many are owned by three other private partners, big names in connectivity - which can guarantee ultra-fast internet connection to the whole island. But how much they are worth is not known.

Yet it is not an insignificant asset: in 2018 some fishing boats had cut two cables then used and the internet made a fuss all over the island. Janna was born precisely to guarantee the "telematic continuity" of Sardinia.

With the launch of a market survey, the Region has decided to allocate 60 thousand to pay an advisor who draws up a detailed report on the value of the cables and explains what is best to do: keep and rent or sell?

The advisor, it says, "will have to draw up a technical-legal and economic study within which a technical-legal survey of the content of possible alternative uses will be carried out, including through the transfer of optical fibers to third parties, starting from the law of use by the Region. In particular ", the document continues," on the basis of the analysis of the founding deeds of the Janna company and of the underlying, connected and consequent deeds to them, it will be necessary to ascertain the effective extent of the right of use of the Region on the optical fibers assigned to it by the company.
