Streets of blood in Sardinia: the record of accidents is in the north
Last year 91 victims across the island, 25 in Sassari. Careless drivers or more dangerous roads? Also recorded too many rear-end collisionsPer restare aggiornato entra nel nostro canale Whatsapp
Sassari is the Sardinian province with the most road accidents. Mortal and no, on straight or in curves, in extra-urban or provincial stretches: northern Sardinia sets the record for almost all the classes taken into consideration by Istat, which draws a (heavy) picture painted with the blood left on the asphalt of the Island.
More careless drivers or more dangerous roads? The answer in the data (consolidated to 2021 and published last week) is not there. But dozens and dozens of cards are provided from which insiders can draw conclusions. Whether they are statisticians or responsible for the management of the road network, public or private.
Last year 3200 accidents were detected throughout Sardinia. Of these, 1315 in the province of Sassari alone. In that of Cagliari, much more populous, the claims were 861 (435 in South Sardinia, 314 in Nuorese and 275 in the province of Oristano).
The deaths throughout the region were 91. With a paradox: in 2019 there were 71, while in 2020, the year of the hard lockdown, as many as 96. When there were fewer vehicles on the roads. And, on closer inspection, it turns out: the black year of the pandemic recorded “just” 2,479 claims.
The highest number of victims in 2021 was recorded once again in the Sassarese (25, with 1853 injured). South Sardinia follows (21, with 667 injured), while Cagliari is in third place for deaths (20, but with over 1140 injured). Worst position for Sassari even if you look at the clashes that took place on the city streets: 490 in all, of which 4 were fatal. In Cagliari there were 427, but with double the deaths: eight.
On the island, the greatest dangers are encountered in urban centers: almost 2000 of the 3200 clashes in 2021 were recorded inside the cities. 611 on the state roads instead.
Of all the accidents taken into consideration for Sardinia, 1145 involved only one vehicle (432, the record, only in the Sassari area). Of these, 389 were investments by pedestrians (and here the worst figure is in Cagliari, with 142).
That perhaps it is not all the fault of the roads can be understood from another focus: in the case of several vehicles involved (2055 accidents throughout the island in a year), 559 were rear-end collisions: 228 in the province of Sassari alone.
