Sirai Hospital at the End of Its Life: Only One Nurse for Every Twelve Patients
The complaint of the NurSind union: «Unsustainable situation, between grueling shifts and hiring with an eyedropper»Per restare aggiornato entra nel nostro canale Whatsapp
Few nurses , "exhausting" shifts and a situation on the verge of collapse . In some cases, a single professional finds himself having to care for 12 patients . "The belt has been tightened to the last available hole and beyond", explains Marco Zurru, union leader of NurSind Sulcis Inglesiente and RSU Asl . The reference is to the staff shortage in the Sulcis Asl , where "the working and personal life of nurses has now become unsustainable. With the failure to replace retired professionals, we have reached the limit: exhausting shifts with very serious work and human damage . New hires are granted with an eyedropper and the staff in service are constantly put under pressure".
As the union reports, "we are forced to resort to additional and extraordinary services to ensure continuity of care and shift work", as happens in the Medicine department of the Sirai hospital in Carbonia, where the nurse-patient ratio, in the best of cases, should be 1 to 6, but in reality, also due to the addition of 8 beds, the ratio reaches 1 to 12, with patients who sometimes require high-intensity care . But the difficulties do not end there. Another example is the Psychiatry Operating Unit, "where the nurse-patient ratio should be 1 to 2 and instead it reaches 1 to 5, with a rate of attacks on staff that is increasingly alarming and worrying". Among the most serious critical issues is also the "progressive aging of the nursing population, with an average age that now exceeds 52 years".
"A condition no longer bearable", reiterated the union, which is asking for "the activation of an extraordinary and immediate hiring plan".
