An autopsy on the body of Matteo Murgia, the 40-year-old shepherd shot dead in the fold with attached stable in Gesturi, in southern Sardinia, will be performed on Friday at the Policlinico di Monserrato. The assignment will be entrusted to the coroner Roberto Demontis who will take care of the exams.
The crime, according to what emerged from the investigations carried out by the carabinieri of the Compagnia di Sanluri and the investigative unit of the Provincial Command of Cagliari, certainly took place in the night between Monday and Tuesday. It has in fact been established that Matteo Murgia, on Monday afternoon, was working in Cagliari for the construction company for which he was occasionally employed. Then he returned to Gesturi and, as always, went to the sheepfold which is located a few hundred meters from the 197 state road. At the moment the exact time of the crime is not known, certainly the autopsy will provide some useful information.
Matteo Murgia was probably taken by surprise while he was near the stables: he did not mention an escape, he was hit by two rifle shots fired at close range in a few moments. The first hit him in the chest, making him stagger, the second just below. The killer then fled.
In these hours the carabinieri of the Compagnia di Sanluri are listening to the 40-year-old's family, brothers, friends and acquaintances. We try to find a possible motive.
The investigations are not easy, there are no cameras or nearby homes in the area. Useful elements could also come from the analysis of Matteo Murgia's cell phones recovered by the carabinieri.
