An 89-metre long ship loaded with goods, which travels under the flag of Antigua & Barbuda, a Caribbean country, has been under administrative custody in the industrial port of Porto Torres since yesterday evening. On board the Viktoria-B, the specialized Port State Control team of the Turritan Harbor Master's Office found serious deficiencies in the safety of navigation which, at the moment, prevent the ship from leaving until they are resolved by the shipping company.

The military, highly qualified personnel for this type of intervention, throughout the day yesterday carried out a detailed inspection inside the vessel with six crew members on board. Landed in Porto Torres on August 16 to carry out some commercial operations, she was stopped in port by the inspectors who found, from the tests carried out on board, that the crew was not fully ready and adequately trained to deal with any emergencies as required by the standards of safety governed by international regulations, including the Convention for the Safety of Human Life at Sea.

The provision that blocks the cargo ship was immediately triggered until the conditions of safe navigation are restored. The inspection activities carried out by the specialized personnel of the Turritan Coast Guard fall within the scope of checking compliance with the national and international conventions applicable to merchant ships and are aimed at the constant verification of the safety conditions, living and working conditions of the crews embarked as well as the protection of the marine environment from pollution.

Checks on ships flying the Italian and foreign flags are periodically carried out by a selected number of Coast Guard soldiers in possession of particular skills, attributed following a hard course of study at national and international level, which guarantee high standards of professionalism in carrying out checks on board to ensure that maritime transport takes place in a safe way for passengers and crews, in compliance with the marine environment and atmospheric emission limits and that seafarers enjoy adequate living and working conditions on board ships .
