A new collaborative project for environmental protection and integration, promoted by the Municipality of Cabras at the Cabras Reception Center for Foreigners, began this morning. The project aims to encourage guests to actively participate in community life.
The initiative, proposed by the Departments of Environment and Social Policies, involves the volunteer work of young people from the Reception Center. They will work on a rotating basis, in groups of at least five people, to help with waste collection in Piazza Stagno and surrounding areas. Activities will take place from 7:00 to 10:00 every Thursday morning and are also open to other volunteers who wish to contribute to urban cleanliness.
"We want these young people to be a positive example for the community and for this initiative to contribute to greater awareness of urban decorum, respect for common spaces, and environmental protection," explains Carlo Carta, Councilor for the Environment and Waste Services. "The project also represents an important opportunity for integration between different cultures. This morning, we began the activities with great enthusiasm: eight young people worked with dedication and precision, thoroughly cleaning the affected areas and properly separating the collected waste."
The center currently hosts 113 people from various countries around the world, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Algeria, Tunisia, China, Nepal, Turkey, India, Iraq, and Bangladesh. Many of them are already integrated into the local economy and work in the restaurant, construction, and agriculture sectors. Others, once they have obtained documents, choose to move to other cities, while a few have decided to stay in Cabras, choosing it for its unique setting.
"The project was created with the aim of fostering concrete paths of integration and empowerment, promoting awareness and respect for the rules of civil coexistence. The social well-being of these young people also depends on the relationships they establish with the rest of the population. Our goal is to create a collaborative partnership that can be sustained over time, resulting in regular social projects that foster inclusion within our community," stated Councilor for Social Policies Laura Celletti.
"The Center's guests must be able to become an active part of the town," Mayor Andrea Abis said. "The Cabras Residential Center is the largest facility in the province, and engagement with the administration is essential to creating the conditions for constructive dialogue with the residents. Achieving this goal requires mutual willingness and collaboration. Integration is also built through concrete actions that demonstrate respect and care for the place that, even temporarily, welcomes them."
During the initiative's presentation yesterday at the Welcome Center on Via Tharros, it was emphasized that cleaning public spaces is not only a useful service to the community, but also an educational opportunity. The goal is to promote greater environmental awareness, starting from the idea that respect for the environment goes beyond waste collection, but also translates into the adoption of proper and responsible behavior.
This morning's participants were provided with gloves, bags, T-shirts, and hats provided by the Sinis Marine Protected Area. Special attention was paid to proper waste separation and good environmental practices.
