Sardinia is the cheapest region for school canteens . This was revealed by the investigation, now in its seventh year, by Cittadinanzattiva .

Taking into consideration a typical family made up of two parents and a child with an ISEE of 19,900 euros and a gross annual income of 44,200 and assuming an attendance of 20 days per month, on the island an average of 61 euros per month is spent in nursery school and 65 in the primary .

This is well below the national average, which is 84 and 85 euros per month respectively , i.e. 4.20 and 4.26 euros per meal.

The most expensive region is Basilicata (109 euros per month), followed by Emilia Romagna (107) and Liguria (103) . Umbria is very cheap (67 euros), a region where people spend more only than Sardinia.

The cost of canteens has increased on average by 3% in Italy . The increase in Sardinia was smaller, around 1.5% . Prices increased in all regions except six: in Abruzzo and Valle d'Aosta it remained unchanged, in Basilicata, Lazio, Tuscany and Umbria it decreased. Significant increases were recorded in Calabria (+26%), Lombardy (+7.5%), Molise (+7.2%) and Puglia (+6.9%) -

As for the ranking by city, the cheapest is Barletta followed by Cagliari , Ragusa and Enna. The most expensive is Turin, ahead of Modena, Trapani and Livorno.

«For years we have been asking that school catering become an essential public service, which gradually becomes free for everyone, starting from those living in poverty», declares Adriana Bizzarri, national coordinator of the Cittadinanzattiva School.
