In Sassari, the small square in front of the church of Sant'Apollinare (one of the most evocative and well-known corners of the capital) has been cleaned up, which yesterday afternoon had been filled with furniture dismantled from a house located nearby. Which aroused the indignation of the parish priest of the church (Don Andrea) and of many citizens.
Today, however, it was not the municipality that cleaned up. In fact, the story is quite complex and fits into the context of the houses rented out to some families of the Roma ethnic group, to whom the municipality (as per the initial announcement) should have paid the rent and instead, after a change in the management of the sector, backed down (due to alleged irregularities in the tender) and refused to do so.
The owner of the house in question, where a nucleus of Muslim Roma had been staying for months, emptied the apartment to sanitize it and transport the furniture to the recycling centre. Due to a mix-up with the specialized company, the furniture remained in the square. The same company early this morning proceeded to take away the furniture itself to the eco-center and cleaned up all the spaces. All the costs of sanitizing the apartment, transport and cleaning have been paid by the owner of the apartment in question. So far victim of this intricate situation. As he had the house occupied for months without receiving a euro and as a joke he also had to lose furniture and incur cleaning costs.
