A regional network to support minors with type 1 diabetes in school, sports, and social life , with staff training, integrated care, a regional registry for the disease, and a specialized pediatric diabetes center. This is the goal of the consolidated text unanimously approved by the Regional Council of Sardinia, which allocates resources of over €1.2 million in 2026 and €82,350 annually from 2027 for the maintenance of the information platform.

The law was born from the unification of two proposals presented in 2025, one from the majority and one from the opposition , and was approved unanimously by the Sixth Commission last July .

The measure aims to overcome the difficulties that can still affect families, who in some cases are required to directly support their children at school or in sports activities to manage the condition. The measures include specific and ongoing training programs for school staff and extracurricular and sports workers, an integrated care model, and multi-professional bodies at the district level .

Training must also address emergency management, therapeutic continuity, and the psychological, relational, and educational aspects of the disease. The law also provides for the establishment of a regional registry for minors with type 1 diabetes, integrated with the electronic health record, and a pediatric diabetes network, with the identification of a regional pediatric diabetes specialist center. €549,000 is earmarked for the construction or upgrade of the center, while €549,000 is earmarked for the development of the information platform and €30,500 for training. According to the report, the estimated target population of pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes for the development of the information system is approximately 15,000-16,000.

"This is the first regional law of its kind in Italy," emphasizes Michele Ciusa, leader of the Five Star Movement and the law's sponsor, "and its aim is to ensure a normal life for children affected by this disease through specific training programs for teachers and caregivers ."

"With this measure, we are filling a gap and finally building an organized system in which healthcare, schools, sports associations, families, and institutions can operate in a coordinated manner ," emphasized Forza Italia regional councilor Ivan Piras. "The law introduces specific training for all school workers, so they can adequately address both day-to-day management and any emergency situations."
