An inmate set himself on fire in the infirmary in Bancali and was saved by officers. The episode occurred last night in the Sassari prison when a man, of Moroccan nationality, doused his body with alcohol and then started the flames.

The penitentiary police intervened to help him and also suffered burns. The inmate is currently hospitalized in the burns center of the Santissima Annunziata hospital.

The person reporting on what happened is Antonio Cannas, delegate for Sardinia of the Sappe Penitentiary Police Autonomous Union. «He is a very complicated individual, who two weeks ago - declares Cannas - was responsible for attacking staff by throwing a fire extinguisher at them, reported several times for aggressive behavior and self-harm. Now we hope that our burned and bruised colleagues recover as soon as possible. Our solidarity goes to them."

Meanwhile, a sit-in protest is planned for 28 June in Cagliari, in front of the headquarters of the Superintendency. «We will return to solicit - continues the secretary - the intervention of the Ministry of Justice and the national bodies of the Penitentiary Administration on the critical issues of Bancali, known to all in terms of work, trade union relations and internal security. What is needed here are concrete measures capable of restoring legality and safety for prison officers, left in disarray and adrift."
