In Predda Niedda, an industrial area on the outskirts of Sassari, “irregular” garbage is growing. The legacies of those who, in the city and beyond, do not dispose of their waste in the dedicated eco-centres and dump it along the area’s streets. The mountain of garbage is growing, made up of chairs, armchairs, strollers, household appliances, medicines, expanses of bottles or scooters stripped to the frame and abandoned in the middle of the grass.
Garbage bags are dumped everywhere along with washing machines, cans and wheels, forming a veritable cemetery of waste that extends for hundreds of meters. You can even find tarred cardboard, which should be disposed of by companies that deal with hazardous waste . Then there are also unknown people who steal the covers and grates from wells and manholes, creating a danger for anyone who ends up inside, forcing workers to fill the holes with wheels and bins. And there is no shortage of spaces where garbage and greenery thrive together, creating a hybrid that smells a lot like a favela.
"It's not up to us to clean up," comments the Environment Councilor and Deputy Mayor Tore Dau. "We take care of the management of the greenery and the collection of waste from local businesses." However, there is also waste "stamped" by the Municipality because it does not comply with the collection regulations , which remains there forgotten like the rest of Predda Niedda.
