Great mourning in Sassari for the death of Pierpaolo Fiori, a well-known island sommelier. The sixty-six-year-old passed away today in the capital of Turritano where he was born, leaving a wife and two children. He had started as an agronomist and fruit-growing expert and then, over time, became a professional in oenology.
«He joined the Italian Sommelier Association in 1989», recalls Roberto Dessanti, former president of the AIS, «and held courses in viticulture and sommelier for us».
His knowledge had evolved over time to the point of making him the manager of the Sardinia stand at VinItaly, the important national event dedicated to wines and spirits. Fiori, a respected employee of Agris, the regional agency for agricultural research, was also admired for his oenological preparation. «In fact, he took on the role of curator for 11 years, from 2014», continues Dessanti, «of the Wine Guide for what concerned the island. A delicate task for which he had received everyone's respect because, in addition to his specific knowledge, no one could ever have questioned his honesty».
Those who knew him describe his "innate authority and his being a perfectionist in the field" underlining the enormous loss for the sector.
