1,400 kg of waste was collected yesterday in Sassari's Via Gallura gardens. Plastic Free volunteers, led by coordinators Martina Marongiu, Fabrizio Caggiari, and Laura Sias, worked extensively in the Monte Rosello Alto neighborhood after the municipality intervened in January to remove bulky waste.
Among the 27 volunteers were city councilor Angelo Azara and two residents, who worked to clear the garden of abandoned toilets, tire rims and car batteries, even the hood of a car and the door of an oven, ladders, and many other items left in the grass. Unfortunately, many syringes were also found in gutters and on the ground, with all the associated dangers.
"This is a serious matter," commented activists Roberto Manca and Serena Solinas, who have frequently raised awareness of the situation at Monte. "We have witnessed the degradation and incivility of citizens who have absolutely no respect for the environment in which they live."
The Plastic Free volunteers' motto is "We're always here," a reminder of their commitment over the years to revitalizing the city. "We don't just clean up the environment. We protect the future. Every piece of waste collected is a promise kept," concludes Marongiu. Ultimately, all the waste was removed by garbage collectors working for the Municipality's Environmental Department.
