All day it was as if a smelly blanket had settled over the town, poisoning the air and forcing citizens to stay indoors. From the upper part of the town to the homes closest to the refinery and even in the Perd'e'Sali area: yesterday for the people of Sarroche it was a nightmare day.
The fears
The stench of gas coming from the Saras plant, exacerbated by the wind that unlike other times pushed the miasma right towards the town center, forced the population to hold their noses since the early hours of the morning. Throughout the day the phones of the prefecture and municipal administrators were clogged with calls and messages from citizens worried about the unbreathable air.
The Municipality
The mayor, Angelo Dessì, immediately contacted the top management of Saras to ask for explanations on what happened: «I asked for an urgent meeting to discuss this problem, it is unacceptable that citizens are forced to endure such discomfort, the company has the duty to identify the problem and find a solution to these stench once and for all». Luca Tolu, councilor for environmental policies, urged the intervention of Arpas.
Saras, in a note, does not clarify what happened: «From an initial check carried out we did not detect any anomalies, as a preventive measure, following the report, we implemented further control actions».
