«Not even the new directors agree to come to work in Sardinia. Upon receiving the position, one immediately resigned, another resigned and a third asked for leave. Thus Isili, Tempio and Alghero remain uncovered in addition to Sassari, Nuoro and even Cagliari . In short, little or nothing changes assuming there are no other defections. A humiliation for the entire Sardinian penitentiary system, especially after Patrizia Incollu and Peppino Fois left their lives on the street to honor their work ."

Thus Maria Grazia Caligaris , of the Socialismo Diritti Riforme association, who also points out that "no other Italian region has suffered this treatment either before or now".

Hence the appeal to the Sardinian parliamentarians : «They cannot ignore this situation and must intervene forcefully by claiming the rights of those who work in the island's detention facilities, reminding the Minister of Justice and the head of the department that the island has endured an unlivable condition in the last 10 years but can no longer accept being the laughing stock of Italy."

According to Caligaris, «the competitions, as happens for the assignment of school chairs, cannot be national but regional, even more so on an island . This is also because it could prevent those who participate from having full awareness of the territory and the role they will take on. It is not praiseworthy to join a tender, participate in training courses paid for by the State and then, after three years, give up a job using the qualification acquired for other careers or purposes. In short, assuming that no one else renounces the position or asks for leave, Sardinia's prisons continue to burden a few serious professionals ."

THE GUARANTOR - Irene Testa, regional guarantor of people deprived of personal freedom, also intervenes on the topic: «I learn with amazement and regret of the resignation by the 3 new penitentiary directors. We are witnessing an absurd situation, which today sees 3 out of 6 newly appointed directors giving up their role. It is not acceptable that all the work should fall on director Porcu and director Milanesi, much less can it be accepted that those who participate in a tender do not then take on the task ."

«I hope – continues Testa – that the appeal of Maria Grazia Caligaris, an attentive expert on Sardinian prisons, which she addresses to Sardinian parliamentarians to hold regional competitions since no one wants to remain on the island, will be heard. Evidently, given the situation, there needs to be an obligation that commits the directors to remain at the chosen locations for at least two years. We cannot continue - concludes the guarantor - to ask the few directors present to go back and forth across the vast territory of the island to manage 10 penal institutions. A situation of this type has repercussions both for those who have to serve a sentence and for the entire penitentiary community which has now been suffering and abandoned for too long ."
