Not only West Nile fever and lumpy skin disease, but with the rising temperatures on the island, bluetongue is also making a comeback, although cases remain—fortunately—limited.
According to the latest bulletin from the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Sardinia and the IZS of Teramo, 9 outbreaks of bluetongue have developed on the island in August, adding to the 15 recorded in July for the summer of 2025.
The areas most affected in August were those of Cagliari (2 outbreaks), Nuoro (1) and Ogliastra (6), with a total of 48 infected heads out of 2084 present in the affected areas, and 13 deaths. The virus mainly presents itself with serotype 8, but there are also cases with serotypes 3 and 4.
