In 2023 in Sardinia there were 30% fewer fires than the average of the last 10 years (1,363 against 1,935; in 2021 they were 1,869 and 1,693 in 2022). A reduction in fires which resulted in a – 46% of forest area destroyed and a 40% reduction of non-woodland area incinerated.

The data, updated to 16 August, were illustrated by the regional councilor for the environment, Marco Porcu, on the occasion of the operational meeting with the head of the national civil protection, Fabrizio Curcio, who was visiting Cagliari . An opportunity «to take stock of the “2023 Forest Fire Fighting Campaign” and, more generally, of the entire civil protection activity that is carried out during the year in Sardinia».

During the meeting, explained the exponent of the Giunta Solinas, «some requests that allow us to adapt the regional strategy were also evaluated. Sardinia currently has a significant air fleet, with three Canadairs located in Olbia in the most difficult months, three vehicles from the Fire Brigade, the Air Force and the Army, which add up to the regional fleet, certainly the largest in Italy".

For Porcu «it is important to have more resources to prevent as many fires as possible. Although, in the event of particular weather and climate conditions, the risk is always high and the strategy to be implemented becomes more complicated when Sardinia is affected by several events at the same time. The displacement of vehicles with different characteristics must also be assessed, so as to allow for better adaptation to individual risk conditions.
