The sailboat that had been missing for four days in the Tyrrhenian Sea, departing from Vibo Valentia and heading to Sardinia to participate in the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in Porto Cervo, has been found. The owner was contacted by the captain of the sailboat who told him that, due to the terrible weather conditions, he had decided to head to the safe port of Ponza and not reach the destination.
The shipowner immediately contacted the Olbia Coast Guard who were coordinating the search. The two people on board the sailboat are fine and the vessel is undamaged.
The last signal picked up by the AIS on board dated back to 5pm on 10 September: from that moment on there was no further news of the 14-metre sailing boat flying the English flag, with two Italians on board, which had left Vibo Valentia on the 10th and was headed for Olbia.
The alarm was raised yesterday when the Coast Guard of Calabria contacted their colleagues in Olbia after a telephone cell of one of the two sailors had been hooked up east of Sardinia. The Coast Guard operated at sea with a patrol boat and in the air with an Atr 42 that took off from Catania. The operations were coordinated by the commander of the Operations Department of the Olbia Maritime Directorate, Rosario Morello. In the afternoon, finally the good news.
