The "mystery" of the approximately 12 meter long sailing boat found sunk yesterday afternoon after impacting the breakwaters of the eastern pier of the port of Cagliari has been resolved.

The Harbor Office had started investigations to trace the owner's identity and found him: he is a 62-year-old Russian citizen who had moored it and left with a tender to go and get some fuel. Due to the force of the sea the vessel had come loose and ended up on the breakwater.

The alarm was raised around 3pm . It was feared that there was someone on board, or that the occupants had fallen into the sea. The Coast Guard and firefighters arrived on site with divers, who started the search.

Before the boat sank, a backpack containing documents attributable to the Russian citizen was recovered . For several hours the area of the shipwreck was combed through, but no traces of missing persons were found. During the night, the owner of the sailing boat was traced to a small beach in Sant'Elia.

He will not be able to continue his route in the Mediterranean, which had brought him to Cagliari. And he will be forced to face the costs of recovering the wreckage left on the seabed of Sant'Elia.
