If in 2020 the lockdown imposed by the pandemic reduced the number of road accidents in Italy, the same cannot be said for the island, where the death toll has instead dramatically increased.

This was revealed by a study carried out by Aci and Istat, according to which last year in total terms on Italian roads there were 118,298 accidents with injuries to people, which caused 2,395 deaths and 159,248 injuries. On average, 324 accidents, 6.5 deaths and 436 injuries, respectively, each day. And among the provinces where there has been an increase in the number of victims, there is Oristano in first place (+ 140%; 12 deaths in 2020, 5 in 2019) and in the third, after Barletta, South Sardinia (+76 , 5%; 30 deaths in 2020, 17 in 2019).

Furthermore, Oristano and South Sardinia lead Sardinia to be the only region with an increase in deaths compared to the previous year.

The situation improved instead in Cagliari, where road accidents decreased in 2020 and compared to 2019 by 40%.

IN ITALY - In Italy there are a total of five regions that have marked an appreciable decrease in deaths: Valle d'Aosta (0 deaths), Calabria (-41%), Basilicata (-38%), Emilia-Romagna (-37% ), Friuli Venezia Giulia (-35%). Milan (-32 deaths), Venice (-31), Padua (-28), Rome (-27), and Turin (-26) were the provinces where the most lives were saved.
