Liliana Segre will also be there at the celebrations scheduled for tomorrow in Sennori on the occasion of Remembrance Day .

The participation of the life senator, also linked to the Municipality by the honorary citizenship received in 2019, is remote, through a message that will be read during the day and which was sent to school children and to the entire Senno community in response to the invitation of the deputy mayor and councilor for culture of Sennori, Elena Cornalis.

THE PROGRAM - Off to the appointments at 10, when the animated film " The star of Andra and Tati " will be screened at the Cultural Center, the story of two little sisters aged 4 and 6, Italian Jews from Fiume, who on 29 March 1944 they were deported to Auschwitz and were among the few dozen children who then came out alive from the extermination camp.

In the evening, at 7pm, again at the Cultural Center, there will be a public presentation of the project "The Journey of Memory", to which the Municipality of Sennori has joined again this year. Then the reading of Senator Segre's message and, by the theater association "Il Lentischio", the evocative interpretation of some passages taken from literary works dealing with the theme of the Holocaust. The initiatives will close with the screening of the film " Jojo Rabbit ", by director Taika Waititi, based on the novel "Caging Skies" by Christine Leunens, and winner of an Academy Award and a BAFTA Award, both for best screenplay not original.

“LEST WE FORGET” – «Remembrance Day is a very important date for us which, even during the lockdown due to the pandemic, we have not given up on celebrating by giving away books on the subject to fifth grade and third grade students, so that could understand the tragedy and not forget», explains Elena Cornalis . «Because this is the principle for which Remembrance Day was born, for it to be one more day, and not the only day in which we remember the atrocities generated by Nazi hatred. Furthermore, this year the celebrations are embellished by our honorary citizen, Senator Liliana Segre, who accepted our request to be present by sending a letter addressed to the whole community. Useful words to understand the importance of knowing and making known what happened, to ensure that it doesn't happen again. And having been defined in your letter as "outposts of legality" makes us even more proud».

THE MESSAGE“Dear fellow citizens of Sennori, dear girls and boys from local schools, thank you for the invitation to participate, albeit with a message, in the celebration of Remembrance Day 2023 in the land of Sardinia.

Remembrance Day is an important and non-ritual appointment, because, as Primo Levi warned, "it happened, it can happen again". The past has never definitely passed. Even if the fire of hatred, racism and discrimination is always smoldering under the ashes, for this reason we must constantly keep our guard up: families, schools and society must be places where the education of boys and girls, but then of all citizens, goes hand in hand with the cultivation and putting into practice of the values of knowledge, responsibility and solidarity.

Unfortunately, for reasons beyond my control, I will not be able to be present in Sennori in person, but I wish your Remembrance Day celebrations every success. I know that there will be a film screening and the public reading of passages from the testimonies of Holocaust survivors, these are important things because they serve to keep the memory alive and to encourage personal commitment. Today and always the possibility of a better future is entirely in our hands, in our intelligence, in our sensitivity.

Once again a warm greeting to all and all ".

Liliana Segre
