Daniela Valdes, 55, lived in Flumini di Quartu: she entered the emergency room of the Polyclinic shortly after eight in the morning last Saturday. In the middle of the next night, around 2, she died. “And we haven't heard from him all that time. When I asked them, over the phone, the first time they told me not to call, because they would update us. I waited many hours, I tried again: whoever answered closed the phone in my face ”.

Anna is Daniela's sister. He works in a sheltered home for the elderly. Knows the stress to which health workers can be subjected during this period. And he knows that access to the ward is prohibited by Covid.

But the treatment he received "is inhuman," he says today. And this is why he wants to make his complaint public: “To understand what happened, between the emergency room and the ward, we will ask for the medical records. My sister suffered from a serious illness, but we still want to know the causes of death. The problem now, however, ”he stresses,“ is the treatment that we relatives have received. Those who work in hospitals are under pressure, we know. But these behaviors cannot be justified ”.

When Daniela was taken to the emergency room, a nurse gave her family a number to contact: “We called. They assured us that they would keep us informed ”. Instead, as the hours go by, nothing. “I waited a long time,” adds Valdes, “and I tried again. When I said who I was, they cut off the communication ”.

The use of 112 was also useless : “The carabinieri told us that they couldn't do anything about it. And they gave us a number to contact: it was the one we already had. I am still waiting for the information call. In the meantime, the one who told me that my sister was dead arrived ”.

The medical director of the Aou, Ferdinando Coghe, informed about the affair, is keen “to apologize to his family. Even difficult working conditions such as those that the operators are experiencing do not justify such behavior ". The humanization of care, he adds, “must be a goal. What happened was certainly not wanted, but we need to improve, both in patient care and in managing the relationship with family members who are outside. It must not happen again ”, concludes Coghe.

In the evening, the health company announced that another sister of Daniela Valdes, on Saturday in the late afternoon, was able to see the patient for a short period: after a long wait in the emergency room, from where no answers came, she had been admitted to the ward. Family members confirm: it was possible, they say, after the relative had asked the ushers for news about her sister, who helped out. Meanwhile, the update from the emergency area has never arrived.
