Regardless of any political or ideological opposition, the graffiti that appeared in Nuoro a few days ago—on the wall of an old house on the central Via Lamarmora, in the historic Sos Sette Fochiles neighborhood—recalls one of the darkest periods in European and world history. In black spray paint, someone wrote in English , "Jews Not Welcome," a message that, when translated, means "Jews are not welcome."
An unequivocal phrase, leaving no room for interpretation and directly evoking sentiments of hatred and discrimination based on religion and ethnicity. And no one, for a week, has ever reported it or taken the responsibility to denounce and delete it . A serious act, reminiscent of the climate when similar graffiti could be seen at the entrances of businesses across Europe, on the eve of the persecutions that culminated in the Holocaust during the Nazi regime.
Just above the writing, on a balcony, a piece of sheet in the colors of the Palestinian flag has been hung . Here too, another phrase appears, difficult to decipher, although it appears to be a call for a Free Palestine. The juxtaposition of the symbols with the anti-Semitic slogan seems to link the Middle Eastern conflict to a message of exclusion and hatred, fueling a dangerous confusion between political criticism, the legitimate fight against injustice, and discrimination against an entire people. Not a good calling card for the city, which will see the arrival of the Giro di Sardegna convoy tomorrow.
