Fire at the juvenile prison of Quartucciu, in the locality of Su Pezzu Mannu, in the early afternoon today. The flames broke out inside the structure, in a cell.

According to an initial reconstruction, an inmate set fire to a mattress . It appears to be a foreign boy who had recently arrived at the juvenile prison in Quartucciu together with two other young people with whom he shares the same cell. In recent days, all three had asked for the precautionary measure to be re-examined in order to return to the community: a request that had been rejected. For this reason, the educators and the agents interpreted the fire as a form of protest.

The Penitentiary Police officers intervened immediately to put out the flames and evacuate the section, since the air was unbreathable. The three young people inside the cell, along with the other inmates, were the first to leave the area and the fire was managed with the resources available in the juvenile prison. The damage has yet to be quantified.

Two officers had to go to the emergency room for discomfort due to intoxication. They were admitted for observation and will remain in the hospital until tomorrow. Other officers were checked on site, where an ambulance had also arrived.
