Work on securing the Quartu section of Viale Marconi from Via De Gasperi to the Carrefour is still stalled. The Metropolitan City, after a series of postponements over the past two years, had announced construction would begin by Easter. Easter has passed, summer has arrived, and there's no sign of the workers. Apparently, as the Metropolitan City explains, "an expert report has been submitted, for which opinions have been obtained from various agencies, but approval from the Municipalities of Quartu and Quartucciu is still awaited." Not a word more has been said, but it appears the report should cover the remodeling of the bike lane, the lighting system, the speed bumps, and the upgrades to the bus stops.
There's no date or certainty about the construction site's opening, amid protests from residents and the thousands of people who travel along one of the province's busiest thoroughfares every day. The project involves the construction of a roundabout at Via Maiorana, which will allow for U-turns and access to businesses. This will also provide an opportunity to complete Via Maiorana itself, a road that has never been completed, and which will be connected to the road behind the Carrefour, thus easing traffic.
The second phase will involve the construction of sidewalks, green spaces, and bike paths. This will also include underground utilities to prevent flooding near the Carrefour. Via Fermi will become one-way from Viale Marconi toward Via Segrè. Pedestrian safety will be a top priority. The sidewalk will no longer be adjacent to the lane like the current one, but will be far from the road, separated by a green area that will also border the bike path. There will also be raised pedestrian crossings near the intersection with Via Bizet, where the current crossings are dangerous and difficult to see. In the second section, additional crossings will be built near the MD and Via Maiorana, where the roundabout will be built and the bus stop will also be located.
