Over three kilometers of illegal fishing nets were discovered and seized at Margine Rosso, in the waters off the Quartu coast . The discovery dates back to this morning, when the Carabinieri of the Cagliari Underwater Unit went into action during a seabed monitoring and cleanup operation.
The equipment had been placed at sea without the necessary surface marker buoys and without the identification codes required by law , making it completely illegal. The material , recovered during the dives, was immediately removed to prevent further damage to the marine ecosystem and made safe for disposal. The competent administrative authority was informed of the operation for further action.
The operation is part of the Carabinieri's environmental protection efforts, with a particular focus on combating so-called " ghost nets ." In recent months, the military had conducted similar operations in the Golfo degli Angeli and the Villasimius Marine Protected Area , removing abandoned traps and equipment, which pose a threat to both marine life and navigational safety.
