Stop the travel of the Eurocargo Sicilia, the all-freight ship of the Grimaldi company which in service on the Porto Torres-Genoa route suspended travel from Sunday 24 December to 3 January due to "idle parking".

Even this evening, as unfortunately has happened on other occasions, the Grimaldi freight ship will not depart from the port of Porto Torres.

The event is once again denounced by the general secretary of Filt Cgil Sardegna Arnaldo Boeddu who points the finger at the regional council and the national government for a continuity of transport of dangerous goods such as "anhydrous" ammonia, an "indispensable product for the industrial sites of Fiume Santo and Portovesme to reduce fumes from the power plants, as well as oxygen for hospitals across the island. In this last case, the damage caused is even more serious since the oxygen to be delivered to hospitals has very specific requirements and deadlines." For the union leader «considering that these products, as well as others, due to their danger, can only be transported on freight ships and that these connections do not benefit from economic contributions, I am not surprised if the shipowner, in cases where where the ship does not have a sufficient load, given the lack of public service obligations, does not make the trip so as not to make a loss".

In the opinion of Secretary Boeddu, an in-depth study of the dangerous goods transported to and from Sardinia can no longer be postponed «in order to rethink this service as a whole and ensure that dangerous goods, in some cases even life-saving, are not subject to the very strict laws of the market". «What happened today», according to the number one of the CGIL Trasporti, «is only the tip of the iceberg and it is for this reason that this problem must be addressed immediately before it takes an irreversible drift that could put health, businesses at risk and consequently jobs."
