"The Ministry of Health, following the selection procedures, has entrusted the role to the trusted doctor, assigned to Costantina Greco, who will operate in Alghero to ensure health care for seafaring and maritime personnel. Good news for those who, while waiting to embark or for biennial visits, were forced to travel to Olbia to use the service ." These are the words of the regional councilor for Agriculture and Fisheries, Gian Franco Satta, and the commander of the Port Authority, Giuseppe Cannarile, in the meeting with representatives of the navies that operate in the Gulf of Asinara.
A meeting organized at the headquarters of the Asinara National Park, by the same competent regional department, in which, in addition to the fishermen and the associations of the sector, also the regional director of the Fishing service, Gavino Palmas, the municipal councilor for Productive Activities, Tore Frulio and the director of the Park, Vittorio Gazale, participated.
"I am announcing that the contracts for the medical officers of Porto Torres and Sassari are about to be concluded" , adds Cannarile. "In the meantime, we are working in collaboration with the municipal administration, to be able to guarantee a clinic in Porto Torres as well. Unfortunately, this is a low-paying activity, with remuneration paid based on the number of visits in an area with a small catchment area". The service was suspended in the city of Porto Torres in June last year, following the dismissal of the last medical officer .
At the center of the meeting were the various critical issues in the world of small-scale professional fishing that must clash with the activity of sport fishing, the issue of the capture of small-sized lobsters and octopuses. "A regional law is needed to protect small-scale fishing," said Councilor Satta. "A general discipline that identifies a calendar for sport fishermen, limiting the fishing days for the latter. As regards the capture of small-sized octopus and lobster, fishing must be closed from April 1 to August 31 to ensure the repopulation of the seas." This approach was requested, shared and supported by Councilor Tore Frulio. To promote the process of preparing the law, it is necessary to start collecting signatures from the various navies.
The meeting continued with the illustration of the Pesca call for proposals on “Actions aimed at improving the environmental status of waters” by the director Palmas. «These meetings are useful for gathering the requests of fishermen, especially those of small boats that represent the majority», adds Satta, «who note difficulties in participating in this call for proposals currently being published. In the subsequent calls, in fact, we will meet their needs to allow the participation of small-scale fishing operators».
