November 4th marks the Day of National Unity and the Armed Forces. The municipal administration of Porto Torres, as is tradition, will honor the memory of all those who fell in the Great War with a solemn celebration to which the entire population is invited. The ceremony will begin at 9:15 a.m. in Piazza Umberto I, with a gathering of military, civil, and religious authorities and representatives of veterans' associations in front of the war memorial. Participants will then proceed to the Church of the Beata Vergine della Consolata, where Father Salvatore Masia will officiate at Holy Mass. Following the service, at 10:30 a.m. in front of the Town Hall, the traditional civil ceremony will take place, with the placing of laurel wreaths at the foot of the monuments to the Fallen of the First World War and to the Fallen at Sea. After a minute's silence, the Fighter's Prayer and the citation for the Unknown Soldier's Gold Medal for military valor will be read. The ceremony will conclude with a speech by Mayor Massimo Mulas.
Finally, the procession will head to the cemetery on Via Balai, where laurel wreaths will be laid on the graves of Carabiniere Walter Frau and Finance Police Officer Salvatore Cabitta. To honor the sacrifices of the soldiers who fell defending their country during the First World War, the burial of the "Unknown Soldier" took place on November 4, 1921, in the Shrine of the Altar of the Fatherland in Rome. With Royal Decree No. 1354 of October 23, 1922, November 4 was declared a National Holiday. This day is a special reminder of all those, even very young, who sacrificed their lives for the ideal of country and devotion to duty: values that have remained unchanged over time, for the soldiers of that time and those of today.
