The mayors of the affected towns—Banari, Bessude, Bonnanaro, Bonorva, Borutta, Cheremule, Cossoine, Giave, Pozzomaggiore, Semestene, Siligo, Thiesi, and Torralba— held an extraordinary meeting of the assembly of the Union of Meilogu Municipalities to discuss the emergency situation regarding plastic waste collection following the closure of the Tergu storage facility due to saturation.

In recent days , discussions have been initiated with the Regional Department of the Environment, the Prefecture, the National Association of Italian Municipalities (ANCI), and other stakeholders to resolve a problem that has been addressed with great attention and concern in Northern Sardinia. This nationwide criticality has forced the competent Ministry to initiate a crisis discussion.

Recycling companies are struggling to sustain the supply chain due to rising energy, transportation, and processing costs. Above all, they are unable to sustain competition from China, which supplies virgin plastic at a much lower cost than recycled plastic.

For the mayor of Cheremule, Salvatore Masia, "it's becoming difficult to find a local solution to a problem of this magnitude. It's also becoming difficult to develop emergency solutions that are tailored to the diverse needs of the Meilogu villages, where, for example, there are towns with 3,000 inhabitants and towns with 200. Amid all this," he continues, "are the inconveniences of residents who pay high bills and clearly expect a service in return. Bills that rise year after year despite claims that recycling would save money."

The municipalities of Meilogu, as well as those of Anglona, have three days, until Friday, December 5th, to find a solution . "Formula Ambiente, whom I thank," continues the mayor of Cheremule, "the company responsible for waste collection is working on possible extraordinary solutions, and we are in close contact. Should we face a continuation of the emergency, I am evaluating the extraordinary opening of the recycling center with an ordinance: it is a very delicate and complex process due to a series of implications that the accumulation of waste entails."

In the long run, local administrators may be forced to ask residents to change their disposal habits. "At that point, the cans will no longer be "used" with plastic but with glass: this way, another recycling plant would accept the plastic."
