The leading experts in search and rescue at sea gathered in Cagliari , for an intense three days organized by the Italian Coast Guard in collaboration with the European Frontex Agency.

At work are the adherents to the Sarmeddocc agreement (signed by France, Spain and Italy in October 1972 with the aim of improving coordination and cooperation in the western Mediterranean and border regions), with representatives of the European Frontex agencies and Ems, as well as the national and foreign assets operating within the international operation Themis 2022, coordinated by the Frontex Agency itself.

The most recurring issues relating to rescue at sea will be addressed, "also with the aim of formulating proposals aimed at increasing the capacity for operational exchange and joint intervention between the assets of different countries"; a note reads, "and at the same time enhance the operational response capacity for saving lives, also through the exchange of knowledge and shared experiences".

The highlight is Thursday, with a complex SAR exercise that will see about 20 aircraft and boats engaged in a rescue operation to an airliner with 55 passengers on board, which crashed into the sea due to a fire. The name is Squalo 2022.
