Pichetto: "We can't pave Italy with wind turbines and solar panels; we need to focus on nuclear power."
Energy: Saras hosts a conference in Cagliari. The Minister of the Environment said: "Renewables won't be enough to meet the increased demand; we need to consider modern, clean power plants.""With the energy demand we will have in the coming decades, due to the electrification of the production system, the efficiency of buildings, and data centers, analysts tell us that in the next 10-15 years alone we will already have approximately 100 billion kilowatt-hours of additional demand ." This figure, due to the need to decarbonize, cannot be achieved with renewables and geothermal energy alone . Therefore, "we must consider a clean form of energy production such as nuclear energy , the advanced third-generation one." Also because "we cannot pave" Italy with photovoltaic panels and wind turbines . This was stated by Environment Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin on the sidelines of the conference at the T Hotel in Cagliari, organized by Saras . A meeting also attended by Regional President Alessandra Todde.
At the heart of the ongoing interventions are the structural fragilities highlighted by the crisis that led to the long blockage of the Strait of Hormuz (through which much of the aviation fuel consumed by European airlines passes), as well as the consequences of the decarbonisation policies implemented by the European Union , including measures such as the ETS , which has a heavy impact on Sardinia's economy.
During the conference, data on petroleum products were also released: from 118 refineries in 2009 to 83 today. In 17 years, Europe has lost 35, most of which have been relocated to Asia or Africa . This figure demonstrates the continent's increasingly significant dependence on imported refined petroleum products, in a global market where demand remains, for now, constant and strong.
