An inmate set himself on fire last night at the Bancali prison in Sassari and, in an attempt to save him, some policemen were injured with burns, fractures and bruises.
Gennarino De Fazio, general secretary of the UilPa Penitentiary Police, intervenes in the case and notes a rather singular circumstance: «Taken to the city hospital, the attacker and one of the attacked were hospitalized in the same room of the burns center».
The episode occurred around 10pm, while the prisoner was in the infirmary. He doused the premises and himself with flammable liquid (probably alcohol) and then started the fire.
«With the continuing prison emergency, 18 thousand officers missing, 14 thousand prisoners more than the places available, suicides, murders, fights, rapes, devastation and much more, we thought we had seen it all, but evidently the harsh reality manages to overcome even the our most fervent imagination – says De Fazio -. Now, perhaps, we expect that the hospitalized colleague, while he is there, will be responsible for supervising the prisoner", adds the secretary sarcastically.
«More seriously, we ask the regional and national leaders of the penitentiary administration to intervene immediately with the health management of the Sassari hospital for the necessary allocation of the attacked policeman to a different room, aimed at also guaranteeing him the necessary safety and serenity», he concludes De Fazio.
