Carabinieri from the Ghilarza Company's Operational and Mobile Unit arrested a man and charged two people with various charges of aggravated extortion, committed using the so-called "fake law enforcement officer" technique.
The three, all from Campania, were identified during investigations initiated following a complaint from an elderly woman in Fordongianus .
According to investigators' reconstruction, the victim was contacted by phone by a man posing as a member of the Guardia di Finanza (Financial Police). He accused her of involvement in a theft from a jewelry store in Cagliari, claiming that her identity card had been found at the scene of the crime. Fearing criminal prosecution and exploiting the woman's particularly vulnerable situation, the alleged law enforcement officer allegedly tricked her into handing over €3,700 in cash, as well as numerous gold jewelry. These were later collected from her home by an accomplice, also falsely identifying himself as a financial police officer.
The investigations identified the vehicle used by the alleged perpetrators, and the investigations then led to the identification of the three individuals staying at two accommodation facilities in the capital. From the photographs, the victim of the scam identified one of the individuals. The arrested individual was taken to Massama prison for judicial review, while the search is ongoing to recover the stolen goods, likely entrusted to other accomplices.
