Pediatric and neonatal surgery restarts at the Aou of Sassari. A place where small patients receive medical care, where children feel protected and understood and in an environment that promotes their emotional, psychological and social well-being.
"In a very short time we activated Day Surgery to guarantee short access, just one day, to small patients and, in this respect, we are in line with the best pediatric hospitals on the peninsula. The goal is to focus attention on children in hospital and reduce waiting times, to concentrate not only on physical healing , but also on supporting the child in his entirety and his parents", declared Antonio Lorenzo Spano, general director of the University Hospital of Sassari.
"In parallel with ordinary surgery, in early September we restructured the surgical activity of our Operating Unit by introducing Day Surgery for some pediatric surgical pathologies. During the first operating sessions, 23 surgical procedures have already been performed on pediatric patients of different ages, even with minimally invasive techniques where indicated, including some fifteen-year-olds," explained Francesco Saverio Camoglio, director of Pediatric and Neonatal Surgery at the AOU of Sassari since August 2, "in pediatric surgeries that do not have Day Hospital, the patient's stay in hospital is three days, while we reduce the overnight stay to zero and this means greater well-being for the child and the parents. Furthermore, Day Surgery represents a considerable saving in terms of personnel, costs and time. One of the new features is that we have raised the age of pediatric patients to be operated on to 16, while previously children aged 14 to 16 were taken care of by General Surgery."
The Aou, thanks to Day surgery, offers a service that benefits the pediatric patient because it seeks to reduce trauma. The goal is to integrate care paths that respect the needs of childhood and the active involvement of families. The child who must go to the operating room, if there are no particular indications, does not do certain tests that could increase discomfort and lengthen the times and this represents an important benefit for the child. Two operating sessions are scheduled every week (Tuesday and Thursday) and in the future it is planned to open on Saturdays as well. Another new feature is linked to the doubling of hours - even in the afternoon - for outpatient visits with the opening of the diaries from October 1st. A child-friendly hospital, full of welcoming, colorful spaces designed to encourage play and distraction. A service aimed at users of the area but also the neighboring provinces, in particular Olbia and Nuoro, which belong to the Sassari Hub.
