At the end of a long and detailed indictment in the Court of Assizes in Nuoro, the prosecutor Riccardo Belfiori asked for life imprisonment for Orune's twin brothers Mauro and Giuseppe Contena , aged 54, accused of the murder of Mauro Antonio Carai, the 72-year-old farmer killed with 35 stab wounds on the night of August 28, 2021 near his Fiat Punto in the countryside of the town.

In front of the Court presided over by Elena Meloni, the public prosecutor retraced the salient features of the trial and the evidence against the accused, starting from the blood traces found in the cars of the two twins, as well as on a t-shirt recovered from their homes. The environmental and telephone interceptions taken against the Contena brothers' relatives were also decisive in the request for a life prison sentence: in several conversations they explained that the twins had made a mistake, holding them responsible for the crime. The motive, according to the prosecutor, is to be found in disputes over grazing issues, a quarrel, yet another, which ended in blood.

The investigations had almost immediately led to the traces of the Contenas, but the turning point came with the evidentiary incident on 8 November 2021, when the Cagliari Ris expert ascertained the compatibility of the DNA found with that of the victim. At that point the arrest and transfer to the Badu 'e Carros prison took place : it was December 2021. After the prosecutor, the plaintiff lawyers Lorenzo Soro and Pasquale Ramazzotti spoke, asking for criminal responsibility to be «recognized of the accused in relation to the crime". The trial was adjourned to April 8 for the speeches of the defenders, the lawyers Luigi Esposito, Stefano Zoccano and Nicola Caricaterra. The sentence could also arrive on the same date.
