The debate over horse racing safety is heating up. The new regulations introduced by the Abodi decree to ensure greater safety threaten to disrupt centuries-old events such as the Sartiglia, Sa Carrela 'e Nanti di Santu Lussurgiu, and many other events. Solutions are being sought "to protect tradition while respecting the regulations," assures the mayor of Santu Lussurgiu and regional councilor, Diego Loi. No one is willing to commit, but the feeling is that if a compromise isn't reached, many riders will be left behind.

"The issue is being addressed on multiple levels," explains Carlo Cuccu, president of the Oristano Foundation. "All the parties organizing the Sartiglia, each within their own sphere of expertise, are evaluating a solution." A synthesis will need to be reached that reconciles the various positions, while keeping in mind that the authorities still require safety measures.
