Two new cases of West Nile virus have been reported in the province of Oristano. Following the five reported yesterday , today's additions include a man in his 80s from Ardauli and a man in his 70s from Cabras, both hospitalized at San Martino Hospital.

As is standard practice, the Department of Prevention has begun an epidemiological investigation and the identification of the areas where those infected with the virus live, for disinfection within 200 meters of their homes. This brings the total number of confirmed cases in the province of Oristano since the beginning of 2025 to 24, with 11 still hospitalized and 12 discharged . One patient died last week in Ghilarza .

"We emphasize once again that 80% of those infected by the virus develop no symptoms, 20% develop a flu-like illness, and less than 1%, mostly frail and elderly individuals, experience more serious symptoms, such as encephalitis and meningoencephalitis ," says Maria Valentina Marras, director of the Health and Prevention Department of Oristano Local Health Authority (ASL) 5. "But it is especially the elderly and frail, and those with pre-existing medical conditions, who are at greatest risk, so we once again urge them to scrupulously adopt prevention and protection measures against mosquito bites, the insect that carries the virus."
