Two doctors for 500 patients. The disaster of the Oncology of San Martino is written in the numbers, where two specialists are left to take care of all the therapies of the department, without even nursing support. A very complicated situation that involves working hours that are now unsustainable for the surviving staff but also further difficulties for the patients, already in great suffering given the pathologies they have to deal with. The alarm is being raised by the relatives of the patients and the Committee for the right to health of the province of Oristano, which is asking the regional councilor Bartolazzi for "an immediate solution".

In Oncology the situation was critical since last spring, the follow-up activities (periodic check-ups for people who have been diagnosed with cancer) had been suspended and only those for patients in active therapy were guaranteed by the three doctors who remained in the trenches (there were six until a year ago). Now the situation has worsened, there are only two oncologists but the patients are increasing.

"This situation is the result of the numerous competitions held in the past for Ares and not for the ASL - observed Maria Carmela Marras, one of the Committee's representatives - the specialists preferred the hospitals in Cagliari and Sassari and not the more peripheral ones".

The Committee launches an appeal to the Region. "A rebalancing of personnel is essential, we must guarantee the number of oncologists needed at the Oristano hospital to avoid delays in treatment and further inconvenience to patients."
