Wind turbines are also dangerous for vultures. This is what LIPU, Oristano section, led by president Gabriele Pinna, says.
To make people understand the danger of installations near nesting nests, the association, among the most important in Italy and Europe, which has always fought for the protection of birds, the conservation of nature, the promotion of ecological culture, has made public an investigation on the collisions of griffon vultures with wind farms carried out some time ago in France, precisely in Causses.
"The study found that the increase in wind turbine installations could affect bird populations due to collisions with the blades - the association reports - The flight responses of 25 adult Gyps fulvus (Griffin Vultures) equipped with GPS were studied for over three years in the four most visited wind farms. At most sites, the griffon vulture did not show avoidance behavior of the blades. The researchers therefore found that to reduce the risk of collision, stakeholders should avoid building wind farms near vulture nesting colonies. But give priority to the detection of species that are unable to avoid the installations".
