Work has restarted on the Cumbidanovu dam in Orgosolo: this time the aim is to close the construction site that is a symbol of unfinished works in Sardinia - construction began way back in 1989 - within three years.

This morning the delivery of the works to the company Icm spa of Vicenza, which won the contract for the construction and completion of one of the most important infrastructures on the Island, crucial to solving the dramatic problem of drought between Barbagia and Baronia. One thousand and fifty days, almost three years, the time agreed for the completion of the work and 110 million euros the amount allocated until the end of the works, to which are added another 34 million used in recent years. The dam will have a capacity of 13.32 million cubic meters and will be used to supply water for irrigation purposes for approximately 2,800 hectares of agricultural land, for industrial uses with a continuous flow of fifty liters per second in the Municipalities of Orgosolo, Oliena, Nuoro, Orune, Lula and Dorgali and a small part for the production of electricity.

But the reservoir will also be of help to Cedrino, in case of water shortage, thus strengthening the network of the lower Baronia, which this year has suffered more than others from the drought. "Today is a memorable day for the restart of the dam that we have been waiting for for more than 30 years", explains Ambrogio Guiso, president of the Consorzio di reclamation della Sardegna centrale, the contracting body for the dam, "It is a work that has immense value for the towns of Orgosolo, Oliena, Dorgali, but also for the city of Nuoro and the towns of the lower Baronia. During the works, approximately 100 workers will be employed, including workers and related industries, thus distributing economic capital across the territory and strengthening human capital".

Also present at the delivery of the works were the mayor of Orgosolo Pasquale Mereu, the commissioner of the dams Angela Catalano and the regional councilor for Public Works Antonio Piu: «There are 144 million euros and 1,050 days to see the completed work that will be fundamental for many towns in the Nuoro area and Baronia», Piu underlined, «It is a work that has experienced a thousand vicissitudes in the last 30 years and that we want to pay particular attention to so that this time the work is finally completed».

The Cumbidanovu dam, which is one of the 379 unfinished works in Italy, has had a very troubled path. Construction work began in 1989, but various problems have seen three different companies succeed one another without ever managing to complete the work, which was definitively interrupted following cyclone Cleopatra in November 2013.
