"The agricultural colony model is certainly the one we must promote, because through work we know that we exclude "recidivism"". The undersecretary of the Ministry of Justice, Andrea Delmastro, outlines the future of the penal colony of Mamone. In the morning, the representative of the Meloni government reached the structure in the countryside of Onanì. Not without controversy. "Talking about the relaunch of the agricultural colony without even inviting the mayor of the territory that hosts it (2700 hectares) for a simple greeting, in addition to being institutionally incorrect, is a bit of a mockery", thunders the mayor of Onanì, Clara Michelangeli.
Promises
After a long meeting with the unions, Andrea Delmastro visited the facility in central Sardinia, accompanied by the deputies of Fratelli d'Italia, Gianni Lampis and Salvatore Deidda, and by the provincial coordinator of the party, the mayor of Belvì Maurizio Cadau. The undersecretary made it clear that the relaunch of the Mamone colony is a priority. And although today it hosts just 130 inmates, or a little more, he reassured: «The first thing I committed to is the barracks, so that it can become worthy of this name. My commitment is to recover the funds necessary for this purpose within six months. Also because, the first way to help the inmate is to guarantee the well-being of the penitentiary police officers».
Numbers and controversies
In the past, there were 400 inmates in Mamone, today there are about 130. The prison police officers, however, are 85 but should be 124. "Starting from the fact that the presence of the undersecretary is certainly a positive signal that shows interest in a penal colony that has been in decline for too long, I believe however that for a profitable relaunch we must listen to those who know the chronic management problems that have always existed and also those linked to neglect and territorial abandonment - says the mayor of Onanì, Clara Michelangeli -. Meetings of this importance cannot ignore the presence of our Municipality". Maria Grazia Caligaris, association "Socialismo Diritti Riforme ODV", concludes: "The words of the undersecretary are important but the reality of the spaces intended for detention, obsolete and often dilapidated, is left in total obscurity".
