A solemn ceremony to acknowledge a courageous and significant gesture for the entire community: this morning in Capoterra, at Casa Melis, a plaque of public commendation was presented to Carabinieri Deputy Brigadier Giacomo Atzori. The event, strongly supported and promoted by the Municipal Administration and supported by the Carabinieri, was attended by the Mayor of Capoterra, Beniamino Garau, and the Provincial Commander of the Carabinieri of Cagliari, Brigadier General Luigi Grasso. The event represented a moment of heartfelt gratitude and institutional sharing with the entire local community.
The initiative was in recognition of the soldier's courageous and timely intervention on the evening of November 17, 2025. At that time, a 49-year-old local man, unemployed and clearly mentally impaired, entered the parking lot reserved for municipal employees armed with a switchblade. The man began loudly swearing, threateningly demanding the handover of sums of money he believed were owed to him by social services and the mayor himself.
The shouting and aggressive behavior had caused great concern among the residents present, who, alarmed by the gravity of the situation, had sought help from Deputy Brigadier Atzori, who was near the City Hall at the time, although off duty and in civilian clothes. Demonstrating remarkable clarity and unwavering determination, the officer did not hesitate to intervene to protect the safety of those present. Approaching cautiously but with great operational composure, he managed to disarm the individual and bring a gravely dangerous situation under control, securing him while awaiting the arrival of the Cagliari Mobile Radio Unit patrol, which was immediately alerted.
By presenting the plaque, the Mayor wished to express, on behalf of the entire Municipal Administration and all citizens, his sincere gratitude for the soldier's high sense of duty, dedication, and extraordinary professionalism.
